Star Trek: Short Treks

“Star Trek: Short Treks” is a series of short films originally set within the continuity of “Star Trek: Discovery” before branching out to explore other eras in “Star Trek” history. This Blu-ray set features all four episodes of the first season and five of the six episodes of the second season.The first season features the episodes “Runaway,” “Calypso,” “The Brightest Star,” and “The Escape Artist.” “Runaway” introduces the character Me Hani Ika Hali Ka Po (Yadira Guevara-Prip), who later appeared in “Star Trek: Discovery” season 2. “Calypso” takes place on an abandoned U.S.S. Discovery in the far future and may foreshadow events from “Discovery” season 3. “The Brightest Star” explores Saru’s (Doug Jones) backstory while introducing his sister, Siranna (Hannah Spear), and the Vahar’ai, both of whom returned in the “Discovery” season 2 episode, “The Sound of Thunder.” “The Escape Artist” sees Rainn Wilson return as Harry Mudd, who must work to escape a prison ship. It’s a fun episode with one of the recurring characters from the Original Series who made several appearances in “Discovery.”Season two includes “Q&A,” “The Trouble with Edward,” “Ask Not,” “Ephraim & Dot,” and “The Girl Who Made the Stars.” “Q&A” portrays Ensign Spock’s (Ethan Peck) first day aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise where he interviews with Number One (Rebecca Romijn), only for things to go wrong in a turbolift. “The Trouble with Edward” is a great comedic episode with Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) promoting Lynne Lucero (Rosa Salazar) to captain of her own ship, the scientific research vessel U.S.S. Cabot. Unfortunately, she has a scientist (H. Jon Benjamin) under her command who believes he has a new use for tribbles and soon reveals himself to be an idiot. “Ask Not” portrays Starfleet security placing Cadet Thira Sidhu (Amrit Kaur) in charge of an unexpected prisoner during an attack on Starbase 28. The episode also features Spock (Ethan Peck) and Number One (Rebecca Romijn). “Ephraim & Dot” is a positively delightful entry in the “Short Treks” series, using animation to tell the story of Ephraim, a tardigrade, who takes up residence on the U.S.S. Enterprise and lives through many of its more well-known adventures from the Original Series through the first three feature films while avoiding Dot, a maintenance robot. Archive footage makes it possible for Ricardo Montalban, William Shatner, and George Takei to appear in their respective roles as Khan, Captain James T. Kirk, and Hikaru Sulu. “The Girl Who Made the Stars” is another animated short in which young Michael Burnham’s (Kyrie Mcalpin) parents (Kenric Green) tell her a mythical story from the /Xam Abathwa to ease her fears during a lightning storm in space. Kenric Green previously appeared as Mike Burnham in “Perpetual Infinity” while the story itself played a role in “Brother,” both of which were part of “Discovery” season 2 (for more on the story, see: Hollman, J.C. “‘The Sky’s Things,’ /xam Bushman ‘Astrological Mythology’ as recorded in the Bleek and Lloyd Manuscripts.” African Sky 11, pg. 8).Each episode has a special feature. Some are just audio commentaries while others include extended scenes. There’s also a making-of documentary about “Short Treks.” The episodes “The Brightest Star” and “Runaway” previously appeared on the Blu-ray set for “Star Trek: Discovery” season 2. This set does not include the final episode of “Short Treks” season 2, “Children of Mars,” though that will likely be included in the Blu-ray for “Star Trek: Picard” season 1 as it fills in some of the details prior the beginning of that show. The “Short Treks” episodes featuring Captain Pike, Number One, and Spock aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise work with the “Discovery” season 2 episodes also featuring them to act as a series of backdoor pilots for the forthcoming “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” spin-off series.

If you are not familiar when some of the discovery characters there are some interesting little back stories. I enjoyed them all and note there is one short missing if you want to see it you will have to buy Picard the series. Engage and enjoy.

Spectacular picture and sound quality on all of these short films. THIS is the way to watch these fantastically well made shorts!These short Star Trek films from the producers of Star Trek for CBS All Access run the gamut from drama to comedy, from live action to animation. Some are better than others but overall this is a great collection to watch and own. In this collection we are treated to the humorous origen of the tribbles as we know them, and there's even a Harry Mud adventure included among these short slices of Star Trek fun. There's a lot of really good entertainment to enjoy here. The only short this collection is missing is the "Children of Mars" short, the introduction/lead-in to the series Picard, which is instead appropriately included with the first season set of Picard on bluray (which also looks great, by the way).This is a very good (as well as a fantastic looking and sounding) collection of extremely well produced short Star Trek adventures that is an absolute must for any Star Trek fan. Very highly recommended!

I pre-purchased this in May and it sat on my shelf until tonight. I saw the bad reviews and I just have to say a few things. These short films are awesome and in the spirit of Star Trek. The actors (both veteran and young) were superb. Some you've seen in other version of Star Trek while others were new. If you truly love Star Trek (yes all versions as I grew up with the original story line and was initially upset at the changes in timeline and the consequences it brought), you will find yourself enjoying this collection of mini trek films and animation.
