Each ball in a sleeve has a common number (1-4). They help you distinguish your ball from that of someone else who may be using the same ball, and they also clue you in to when you are running out (so when you get to the sleeve with the balls labeled "4", you only have 3 left). Once you are good enough that you aren't losing balls frequently, it helps you keep track of when it's time to buy more.

Q: Do these have the rubbery texture? Or are they hard?

They have a hard and YES rubbery feel to them. Been playing with them for a year now. They are actually harder to clean with a golf towel while on the course. The towel does not glide over the ball like a std golf ball because of the hard rubbery feel. No biggie though. I love these balls
